Design approach

For this project, i’ve chosen to redesign specific features of the iOS app Goodreads.

I started by downloading the app on my iPhone and navigating through it, exploring its interface. I’ve tested the given problem (book recommendations being too broad and not tailored to a user’s preferences). Then i looked for a page or a subpage with recommendations, and the problem i’ve found is that the “Recommended books” subpage is hidden, and the only way to access it is by pressing the menu button in the bottom right of the screen and tapping on the “Top picks for you” option.

After testing the app and understanding the issue, i’ve created a user flow to get a better view of every step and how to improve the recommendations feature.

To optimize conversion rates, given that Goodreads generates revenue through affiliate links on every Book Page, it’s important to engage users immediately by presenting books that align with their interests within the first few seconds of opening the app. With this in mind, I decided to add a horizontally scrollable carousel featuring 5 recommended books on the home page. Directly below this carousel, I included a subtle “Swipe to see more >>” flickering animation to gently guide users, ensuring they understand that this section contains multiple books of potential interest without causing too much distraction.

Additionaly, i’ve placed another centered text, “Looking for something else? Explore all books recommended for you,” below the carousel, followed by a centered “View Full List” button serving as Call to Action. I chose a different color for this button to highlight its purpose. By changing the button’s color and centering it, unaligning it with rest of the buttons on the page, I ensured it stands out.

By pressing this button, users would be sent to the Discover page of the app, where they would find more recommendations, but also the “Top picks” section, which includes recommendations based on the same genres as the books that the users have read. I’ve designed it in such way that it would encourage curious users to explore further, using the prompt “If you enjoyed X, you should try:” then giving them 3 books to chose from to keep it all interactive. Below the books we’ll find the “Want to Read” button that can be found throughout the app.

On both the homepage and discover page, on the recommended sections, i’ve added a small info button, that opens an overlay page that contains informations about how the recommendations work.

Another thing that i’ve added is a filter button that was missing from the current app on the search page. Filtering the search results and decreasing the time of searching interesting books would also be a nice way of keeping users engaged, optimizing conversion rates.

I implemented these changes in wireframes, following the design of the iOS version of the Goodreads app. Then, i created high-fidelity versions of the most important pages. I believe those changes are one of the best ways to capture users’ attention right from the start, without overwhelming them, while also maintaining the app’s simple design that users are already familiar with. These adjustments aim to increase user engagement and improve conversion rates by making relevant recommendations more accessible.
